Strategic Goals

As part of its strategic transformation process, Wikimedia Canada has identified goals to guide its growth and activities. They are derived from the vision, mission, and values of the organization.

Diversity

The first goal of Wikimedia Canada is to increase the number and diversity of free knowledge and of contributors to all Wikimedia projects in Canada.

Through this objective:

we are dedicated to ensuring a better representation of human, cultural and social diversity within the contributor communities, and to develop their sense of belonging to Wikimedia Canada;
we support the development and dissemination of free knowledge in the languages of Canada, including but not limited to Indigenous languages, French and English;
we encourage the development and dissemination of free knowledge currently underrepresented in Wikimedia projects;
we foster the development of local and thematic WikiClubs, and foster collaboration and information exchange between WikiClubs and contributors across Canada;
we offer an expertise to institutions and organizations that wish to contribute to Wikimedia projects;
we encourage a culture of openness, respect and solidarity among contributors.

Visibility

The second goal is to increase the visibility and reputation of Wikimedia Canada and its activities.

we wish to embody the pan-Canadian diversity in the organization’s activities, partners, communications, membership, and the composition of the Board of Directors;
we want to increase the organization’s reputation as a key player in Canada on issues related to free knowledge mobilization;
we regularly inform the public, partners and volunteers about the direction and activities of Wikimedia Canada;
we deploy programs that are recognized, expected and supported by a variety of partners;
we work to increase the understanding of institutions and the public in Canada about free knowledge, the Wikimedia projects and open licenses;
We actively collaborate and share Wikimedia Canada’s expertise with the other actors of the worldwide Wikimedia Movement.

Adaptation

Our third goal is to adapt Wikimedia Canada’s governance, operational structure and finances to the growth of the association.

Through this objective:

we want to transform the organization’s business model, and diversify its funding;
we aim to build a permanent operational team, in support of volunteers, in order to restructure and optimize processes, to increase internal knowledge management, and to put in place mechanisms for iteration, evaluation and adaptation;
we want to ensure that Wikimedia Canada’s Board of Directors and permanent team are equipped in terms of skills and leadership, and are properly organized to carry out the vision, pursue the mission, and implement the action plan of the organization;
we aim to improve the democratic life of the organization and the active participation of all stakeholders.
