WikiClub Toronto’s first informal editathon

Article written by User:Z1720. This event received a micro grant from Wikimedia Canada.

WikiClub Toronto held its first informal editathon on April 18, where Wikimedians chatted, worked on articles, and ate some appetizers. Attendees discussed many topics, including upcoming wikiconferences, how quickly Wikipedia articles are edited after current events, and where to find reliable sources. Attendees also brainstormed possible future events with the club, including photowalks, exploring institutions like museums and archives around the city, and Wikipedia Day.

The event allowed organisers to gauge interest in informal events, where Wikipedians could chat and ask questions. While more formal events like workshops will still happen, informal gatherings allow volunteer organisers to plan events more frequently at a lower cost. WikiClub Toronto looks forward to having another informal event in the summertime and diversifying the location and dates for these events.

WikiClub Toronto is also interested in expanding this model to other regions across Canada in order to help other WikiClubs with running events. Informal events require less planning, which could be a great entry point for volunteers who do not want to plan big activities. Feel free to contact Wikimedia Canada to get more information on how these events happen.
